Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal Decompression and Massage Therapy in Mckinney Texas

Spinal decompression therapy works by stretching the spine in order to change its positioning, removing pressure from the spinal discs and nerves. This form of therapy is also referred to as traction therapy and is often used to treat nerve impingement caused by disc herniation. Decompression reduces the pressure on the disc and nerve caused by injury, disc herniation, and even gravity. Oftentimes this therapeutic treatment can restore function of immobile joints as well as relieve muscle spasms caused by stimulation of certain receptors. This stretching movement helps to relieve pain by encouraging the flow of spinal fluids, water, and oxygen, promoting healing. Decompression therapy is often used to treat conditions such as sciatica, radiculopathy, and herniated or bulging discs.

Dry Needling

“Dry needling” means a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying neural, muscular and connective tissues for the evaluation and management of neuromusculoskeletal conditions, pain and movement impairments. Dry needling is based on Western medical concepts and is not acupuncture. Other terms used to describe dry needling include: trigger point dry needling. A “dry” needle does not contain medication and is not used to inject medication into the muscle or body.

Dry needling treats muscle tissue, and its goal is to reduce pain, inactivate trigger points and restore function. Dry needling is rarely a standalone procedure. Rather it is often part of a broader therapeutic approach incorporated into other traditional interventions in treatment, such as chiropractic and massage therapy.

How long do the effects of dry needling last?

Length of relief will vary from person to person depending on the severity of your condition and how long you have been experiencing pain. After your initial treatment, results will typically last for several days. With each additional treatment, the goal is that we are able to increase the window of relief with each session, meaning longer relief with each additional treatment.  You may experience some pain that will occur between 24-48 hours after the dry needling treatment. This temporary discomfort will usually go away on its own in one to two days.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissue of the body using various pressures, movements, and techniques to improve overall wellness. This therapy can relieve stress, muscle tension, soreness and pain from injury. Massage therapy can lower heart rate and blood pressure, improve circulation, decrease inflammation, and improve immunity and mental health. Massage therapy has been proven to treat anxiety which can increase energy and overall mood and is often used as an alternative pain management method because it has few to no adverse effects.

Massage therapy has been shown to positively impact the parasympathetic nervous system which controls blood pressure and can reduce the symptoms of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. Hypertension is considered a precursor to cardiovascular disease so symptoms of high blood pressure should not be taken lightly and massage therapy can be an effective means of alternative treatment for this and many other ailments.

Massage Therapy Variations

Here at Vitalogy, alongside our massage therapy services, we offer cupping and scraping. Cupping uses a cup to pull an area of skin into a suction that decompresses muscle and connective tissue. This promotes blood flow to the compromised area, enhances circulation and helps to increase the body’s own healing processes, almost like a backwards deep tissue massage. Cupping encourages faster rates of healing and recovery in the area that has been treated. Similarly, the therapeutic process of scraping, also referred to sometimes as instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, is done by scraping a tool across the affected area and has been shown to decrease pain, improve circulation, and promote healing in the treated area as well as to break down scar tissue. Often scraping can help reduce swelling, stiffness, and bruising and can improve mobility of strained muscles and increase the body’s range of motion.
